Common questions
How does Portion work?
Portion includes five photo scans and twenty typed estimates every day. A scan only counts when an estimate comes back — if something fails, it isn’t used up. Answering Portion’s follow-up question, or adding a detail the photo can’t show, is free too.
When do my free scans come back?
A fresh five every morning at 4:00, your local time — so a late-night snack still counts toward the day you ate it.
An estimate looks wrong
Open the meal to change the items or portions. For better photos, shoot from above with the whole plate in frame, and leave a fork or your hand nearby for scale. If the photo can’t show something — air-fried rather than fried, no oil — tap “Add a detail the photo can’t show” on the review screen and Portion updates the estimate. If an estimate is still far off, tell us through Profile → Help & legal → Send feedback.
Moving to a new iPhone
On the first screen, tap “Already have an account? Sign in” and use the same Apple or Google account. Your plan and targets come back. Meals stay on the iPhone they were logged on, so bring them with a backup: on the old iPhone, Profile → Your data → Back up your log, then save the file to iCloud Drive or AirDrop it. On the new one, tap “Restore a backup” after signing in, or later Profile → Your data → Restore from a backup. Quick Start and an iCloud backup of the whole iPhone bring meals across too.
Turning off AI
Profile → Your data → AI & your data, then turn off “Send meals to Gemini”. Portion stops sending anything, and you can still log meals you’ve had before.
Exporting or deleting my data
Back up: Profile → Your data → Back up your log — one file with your meals, photos, water and weigh-ins that you can restore on any iPhone. Export: Profile → Your data → Export as CSV, for a spreadsheet. Delete: Profile → Account → Delete account. Deleting removes everything Portion holds — on your iPhone, your Apple Watch and our servers — and can’t be undone.
Moving from another app
Profile → Your data → Import from another app. Portion reads MacroFactor's food log and Cronometer's food and weigh-in exports as CSV files, and daily totals from Apple Health — which covers MyFitnessPal and Lose It once their Health connection is on. Days you already logged in Portion are left alone, and importing the same file twice adds nothing. The files are read on your iPhone and never uploaded.
Pregnant or breastfeeding?
In Profile → Health & reminders, choose Pregnancy & breastfeeding and add your due date or your baby's birthday. Portion adjusts your targets using standard pregnancy and breastfeeding guidance, turns off goals that don't suit you right now, and stops adjusting your target from your weight while you're pregnant. It stays on your iPhone. Portion's targets are general guidance — check them with your doctor or midwife.
Is Portion medical advice?
No. Estimates and targets are general guidance and can be wrong. If you’re pregnant, or live with diabetes, an eating disorder or another medical condition, talk to a doctor before changing how you eat.
